Carrara Marble Tour is pleased to offer you a terrific off road 4×4 trip in the stunning scenery of the Carrara marble basins, where some scenes of the James Bond Quantum of Solace film were shooted in 2008. With our professional drivers and tour guides, you will experience the thrill of  travelling along winding, steep roads (usually inaccessible to most visitors) together with the trucks that, during the working days, transport the marble blocks downhill.  A unique, once in a life experience in which you will witness the ongoing battle between man and the majestic mountains that keep this precious material at their inside.

The itinerary

Starting from the parking lot in Fantiscritti, our trip will guide you through a steep marble road connecting a net of 30 open-air active quarries, heading for Quarry n. 83 Canalgrande Alto, at an altitude of almost 1.000 m above the sea level. Here, you will be plunged into a scenery of unparalleled beauty, dominated by the brightness  of  the “white gold”that crops out everywhere around you. Inside the quarrying site, our tour guide will give you very detailed information about both ancient and modern methods of excavation, explaining all their stages of evolution in direct contact with the quarrymen, who execute the cut of the quarry bench and load the marble blocks on top of the trucks right in front of your eyes. From our mountains  you will also enjoy a breathtaking view over the entireApuan-Versilian coastline, the Ligurian sea, Portovenere, the picturesque Cinque Terre villages and the Gulf of La Spezia.

Along the way to Canalgrande Alto, we will show you the places where the exciting chase scene in the James Bond film was shooted.

The Quarryman Breakfast

Try the special “Quarryman Breakfast” at the restaurant Il Poggio (on reservation), experiencing the typical meal of local miners! Discover the real lardo di Colonnata I.G.P., the traditional herbed backfat that is left to age into white marble vats in the near village of Colonnata. You can taste it cut into thin slices laid over a piece of toasted bread, accompanied by a glass of red wine. A chance not to miss in the unforgettable frame of the Carrara marble world!

The city of Carrara is located at the foot of the Alps. It’s known for its beautiful squares and is filled with many portals and architectural details made in the famous white Carrara marble.

The tour includes:

• Client pick-up (limited area)
• Transportation to the Fantiscritti Quarries
• A JEEP Tour (Carrara Marble Tour – see details here on the left)
• A tasting of the famous Colonnata Lard at the Ristorante il Poggio (adults only)
• 30-40 minutes of free time to see the museum / shop / laboratory at the Fantiscritti Quarry
• Transportation to Carrara
• 1 hour free time in the historical part of town
• Transfer to the hotel (end of services)
